"Find Your Writing Tribe": An Interview With Kathleen Contine.
Today's interview is with Kathleen Contine, whose book Metal Bones is coming out in March! It was great to ask her about her journey to publication, writing sci-fi, and finding people who share your love for writing. I hope you enjoy this interview!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Well, my name is Kathleen. I live in a small town in upstate NY and I joined the writing community on Instagram last year around April. It wasn’t until Nanowrimo that I really started making friends and engaging with everyone. I’m really grateful for the people I’ve met!
How long have you been writing for?
I wrote stories when I was little and posted a tiny bit of fan fiction in college but it wasn’t until after I graduated that I decided I wanted to publish my own book. I didn’t realize at the time how much work I was about to put in but it’s all been worth it!
What are some books that have influenced you?
Definitely Harry Potter. I devoured the books when they came out and listened to the audiobooks all the time. I love the characters and themes created in the series. The Princess Bride is also my favorite book and I find myself rereading it all the time. The humor in that book is something I’ve always loved.
What drew you to writing sci-fi?
I think I was drawn to a sci-fi story because of the endless possibilities it holds. There’s so many different things you can do with sci- fi (as long as you stay within the rules of the world you created, of course) And I had been writing fantasy for a while as well that I think I was ready to try something new. I’ve always been a fan of sci-fi as well and creating my own characters and worlds was something I really enjoyed doing.
Can you pitch us your upcoming book, Metal Bones?
Metal Bones is a New Adult science fiction novel creating a mix between Star Wars and Boondock saints. It’s about two brothers, Leo and Gaeth. Gaeth has a virus that causes his bones to turn into Steel while Leo is bringing him to a facility to heal him.
On another planet, Tank is preparing to take place in the Ceremony to fight for a chance to leave his village and go search for his father.
What was the world-building process like for you?
The world building process for me is interesting. I usually listen to music when I write and brainstorm. I’ll either hear a song and it starts from there or I’ll have a character and start building the world around them.
What is the most rewarding part of writing this duology?
Opening that box and pulling out the proof of my book. Editing Metal Bones over and over again and going through all the steps to get to that point were all worth it when I could finally hold it in my hands.
When and where will Metal Bones be available?
Metal Bones will be available in paperback on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and digital everywhere else on March 17th. Pre-orders will be available soon!
What has your journey to publication been like?
My journey to publication has been interesting. It’s my first time publishing a book and everything is new to me. At first I wanted to traditionally publish and my parents bought me a book about that. One of the things the book said you should do was to create an online presence. I decided to go with Instagram and met so many wonderful people in the writing community who have supported me through my writing journey and helped me more than they could ever know! It’s crazy to think that my book is coming out so soon!
What advice would you give to other sci-fi writers?
My advice to other sci-fi writers would be to find your writing tribe. You don’t realize how important these people are until you have one. You celebrate each others writing milestones and are there for each other when you’re going through the tougher parts of writing. It’s something I honestly think every writer should have!
